Barbara Canyes Director Massachusetts Campus Compact Overview: Massachusetts Campus Compact is a nonprofit coalition of 70 college and university presidents committed to developing the civic engagement skills of students, building partnerships with the community, and integrating civic engagement with teaching and research. Membership Benefits: Representing Higher Education Statewide and Nationally Massachusetts Campus Compact’s reputation as a national leader in civic engagement and service learning provides many opportunities to highlight Massachusetts’ campuses to both statewide and national audiences. MACC regularly communicates about higher education’s commitment to public and community services with legislators, corporations, foundations, community based organizations, and media representatives. Advancing the Civic Engagement Movement While Addressing Institutional Priorities MACC works with members in making links between service learning and civic engagement efforts and larger institutional priorities, such as retention of students, multicultural education, community relations, and workforce development. By so doing, we not only advance the civic engagement movement, but also help address other important institutional challenges. Investing in Massachusetts Campuses through Grant Funding Each year, MACC provides over $350,000 in funding to our member campuses in order to support new programming and initiatives, education awards, training and technical assistance, as well as professional development for faculty staff, administrators, community partners, and students. Collaborating Across Sectors MACC is one of only a few state-based membership organizations that intentionally includes members from all sectors of higher education. To promote collaboration across sectors, we regularly facilitate convening and networking opportunities and encourage cross-campus networking and collaboration among faculty, staff, and campus leaders. Promoting Faculty and Staff Development MACC provides a variety of professional development and technical assistance services, including on-site consultations, workshops, institutes, publications, and our quarterly newsletter. These services have reached more than 75,000 faculty, students, and community partners since 1995. Achievements: • MACC has distributed over $4 million in grants to support campus-community collaborations. • MACC has reached over 30,000 campus and community leaders with its training, professional development, and technical assistance services. • Since 1995, MACC member campuses have seen the number of students active in community-based service and learning opportunities increase to over 55,000. • The number of faculty who integrate service-learning into courses and curricula on MACC member campuses has increased from approximately 200 to over 750. • Students at MACC member campuses now contribute well over 1,000,000 hours of service in communities throughout Massachusetts each year. • MACC is the only higher education coalition in Massachusetts that includes a critical mass of public and private, two-year and four-year, urban, suburban and rural campuses throughout the state.
In April, Governor Patrick signed a Social Innovation Compact along with 41 organizations in order to maximize resources in MA and provide innovative thinking around recurring issues in the Commonwealth. This is a great example of the state's commitment to embracing the vast array of resources that are not under direct government management; it's also a commitment from local organizations to knowledge-sharing and collaboration, which will take our resources and abilities further than any one organization can on its own. It's a great step toward solving some of the state's problems cooperatively, instead of through smaller siloed efforts.
